A QR code (abbreviated from Quick Response code) is a square barcode that is readable by QR barcode readers.  The code consists of black dots arranged in a square pattern on a white background. The information encoded can be either text information, a website URL, or other data.

So for example, you can take a URL like www.website.com and this can be encoded into a Quick Response code to be represented as a barcode.

QR codes are the most popular types of two-dimensional barcodes. The QR code was designed to allow its contents to be decoded at high speed. The technology has seen frequent use in Japan, the Netherlands, and South Korea, while the rest of the world has been slower in the adoption of QR codes.

QR Readers (which are available as iphone apps and on some mobile devices) scan or take a photo of the barcode and then the encoded message is encoded.  If the message is a website URL, mobile devices will usually react by instantly going to the URL of the website.

Real estate agents often use it on property signs in order to gather statistics on how many people have seen a particular property sign.
